Newmarket Town Plate 1976-2000

A pivotal moment in horse racing history, and in the history of Newmarket, occurred in 1665 when, on 16th October 1665, King Charles II issued an Article for a race, the Newmarket Town Plate, for horses carrying 12 stone over the Newmarket Round Course on the second Thursday in October each year. Although there was no Jockey Club at this stage, this is one of the first sets of rules governing a race in Newmarket. It is clear that, at this point in time, there is a Clerk of the Course, a Clerk of the Race, a Treasurer, many Judges, one of whom is responsible for checking the weights of riders.

Town Plate over the Round Course

Matinale (5/1) trained by Barry Hills and ridden by John Hills

Rowdy Elf (8/1) ridden by Mrs Marie Tinkler

Hamish (4/1) trained by Gavin Pritchard-Gordon and ridden by Mrs Anne Powell

16-year-old John Hills, son of Lambourn trainer Barry Hills rode the winner while his 13-year-old tiny twin brothers, Richard and Michael, looked on admiringly, each staing that they would like to become jockeys. Did they make it?! Mrs Anne Powell, from Bermuda, had stated that she would love to ride in the Town Plate, so trainer Gavin Pritchard-Gordon invited her to England to partner Hamish, and she was delighted with her third place.

Flying Diplomat ridden by Hilary Jack

Chance Belle trained by Ryan Jarvis and ridden by Jane Jarvis

Queen's herald ridden by Joanne Winter

Hampshire ridden by Heather Pitt

The winner won by 20 lenths and Jane Jarvis, a 16-year-old schoolgirl, who rode the second Chance Belle, supplies her memory of the race. 'My father, Ryan Jarvis, trained and bred the mare Chance Belle who had given my brother William Jarvis his first winner as an amateur rider 2 years before as a 16 year old schoolboy.  In those days, girls could not ride as an amateur until they were 18 years old, and so the only race I could ride in was the Town Plate, and with our family connections with the Town Plate, I know it gave all the family great pleasure that I continued the tradition. This particular year there was a very strong field and I probably kicked for home far too soon, and was beaten by the leading lady amateur rider, Hilary Jack, on a horse called Flying Diplomat who, I believe, had actually won the Triumph Hurdle, while finishing behind me in third was Fred Winter's daughter Joanna.  The ground was unusually firm that day, and my mare definitely preferred softer going, and afterwards never ran again as she had suffered damaged tendons, but finished her days as a broodmare. It was a really fantastic experience for me, and I returned to my school, St Mary's Convent in Cambridge, the following day as a bit of hero, though the Mother Superior was furious that I had missed that day off school!  I received £50 voucher from Goldings in Newmarket, and a box of Newmarket sausages as 2nd prize.'

As a consequence, the Jockey Club decreed that all future runners would require a vets certificate stating that each horse is 'both sound and fit enough to complete 3 miles and 6 furlongs carrying 12 stone'.

Breaking two of the key rules laid down by King Charles II in 1665, the Town Plate was not started at 12 noon and was not on the second Thursday in October, so breaking a thread which had lasted over 300 years although, in truth, it had already been severed in 1940, and for the next 4 years, when no Town Plate was staged. The Clerk of the Course, Nick Lees, accepted that switching to a 3pm start on a Sunday, although breaking with tradition, was aimed at drawing bigger crowds and getting a foot in the door for Sunday racing; Lees did get his wish, for almost 3000 people watched the race. The winner, Kinba, won by 10 lengths with 5 lengths back to the third. Given that it was run on a Sunday, Doncaster bookmaker Herbert King tested Sunday trading laws to the full by taking bets on the Town Plate, but avoided arrest by Cambridgeshire police. The 1962 Betting, Gaming and Lottery Act stated that gambling on a Sunday is illegal.

Alexandra's win upholds the family tradition in the Town Plate, as her grandmother Eileen, daughter of Solly Joel, was the first woman to win the race on Hogier in 1926. Twenty-nine years later her mother Valda Rogerson won the race on Vulpes in 1955. Furthermore, other members of the Joel family who enjoyed success in the historic race were Solna Jones in 1948 on Filius, and Di Thomson-Jones on Stem Turn in 1964.
